Comforting Bible Verses

Unless otherwise stated the Scripture References are taken from the English Standard Version, with links to biblegateway.com. While referring to lots of different versions in my study, I generally use the ESV Women’s Study Bible.

Throughout the Bible we are reminded that God loves and cares for us. As his people faced difficult situations, often of their own making, God promised that he would bring them the comfort and rest they needed.

Jesus also promised that he would provide rest and comfort.

God’s Promises of Comfort

As I put together this Bible Reading Plan on God’s promises of comfort, I realised that a number of themes were emerging. God promises of comfort come in different ways. The type of comfort we will need will depend on our circumstances and our needs.

God’s Promises of Comfort to the Mourning

God often promises comfort to those who are mourning. He understands our feelings and cares for them. One of the most well-known and simplest of these promises is given by Jesus.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matt 5:4

God’s Promises of Peace

There are a number of Bible verses about peace, but not just any peace – the peace of God. God wants us to have peace in our lives but more so in our hearts as we trust in him.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:6-7

 God’s Promises of Rest

God also promises that he will give us rest. This is very similar to peace, but I like the image it portrays. Sometimes we just need to stop!

Blessed be the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. Not one word has failed of all his good promise, which he spoke by Moses his servant. 1 Kings 8:56

 God’s Promises of Mercy

Another way that God comforts us is giving us mercy. His promise of mercy reassures us that his love will never leave us.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning;  great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

final thought on God’s Promises of Comfort

The final verse I have chosen to reflect on today is one that not only comforts us, but also challenges us. It teaches us that God’s comfort is not just for our own benefit. We are comforted so that we can comfort others. We must spread God’s love to others.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Cor 1:3-4

I pray that you will be encouraged, uplifted and comforted as you meditate on the Bible verses in this Bible Reading Plan on God’s Promises of Comfort. These promises are for you!
